Although broccoli has been found to contain the highest amount of glucoraphanin, there are different varieties of broccoli and not all broccoli will give you the same results.
Some varieties of broccoli have very little glucoraphanin, so you could be eating tons of broccoli sprouts yet you don’t get the optimum amount of sulforaphane. Getting a high glucoraphanin content variety of broccoli that is non-GMO is especially important.
We have ascertained that 3 to 5-day old broccoli sprouts (baby shoots of broccoli) will give you the most glucoraphanin content to convert into sulforaphane. Myrosinase has to be present at the same time of consuming glucoraphanin-containing foods for conversion of sulforaphane. This is why extracts of glucoraphanin often don’t work as well.
Increasing Sulforaphane In Broccoli Sprouts By 3.5x
In this video, Dr Rhonda Patrick of foundmyfitness.com, shares how she increases the sulforaphane created from the glucoraphanin in broccoli sprouts by about 3.5x, based on the results of a phytochemistry paper, by heating the sprouts gently up to 60-70oC.
How Much Sulforaphane Do You Need Daily?
The John Hopkins Institute recommends 40 micromoles of sulforaphane a day to sufficiently help mobilize the body’s natural cancer-fighting resources and reducing the risk of developing cancer.
This means that you may have to eat at least:
- 1.3 kg (2.7 lb) of fresh full grown broccoli; or
- 0.6 kg (1.3 lb) of fresh broccoli sprouts

Should You Eat Your Broccoli Sprouts Or Juice Them?
Eating broccoli sprouts: When eating broccoli sprouts, be sure to chew it completely to almost liquid to get the most out of them. Juicing broccoli sprouts: I find extracting sprout juice using a masticating (or slow) juicer gives you the best quality juice and highest yield. Juice is stable and is much more bioavailable to your cells. By juicing it, you are able to increase the amount of broccoli sprouts you consume, thus meeting (or exceeding) your daily quota of 40 micromoles as suggested by the John Hopkins Institute. No toxicity is found from a higher intake of sulforaphane.
Smoothie: Adding them in your smoothie is also a possibility, but I find that the high-speed action of the blender destroys some enzymes and nutrients as it also traps air in the smoothie that oxidizes some of the nutrients.
