Understanding Cataracts

Cataracts are the clouding and deterioration of the eye lens from age-related thickening which used to occur in older persons that may lead to blindness. However, even younger people are now getting cataracts from what we now understand, is due to a faulty diet.

Cataracts, as with any other degenerative conditions, are a result of free-radical or oxidative damage. In the case of cataracts, it is an oxidation to the protein structure of the lens, a process called glycation. The damage is likened to the process of egg white protein turning opaque when it is slowly heated (the process of glycation), working from the outer ring of the lens to the center of the lens.

Studies show that people with low levels of antioxidants in their bodies are more likely to develop cataracts. By keeping the glutathione (our body’s most important antioxidant) level high, cataracts may be delayed and cataracts surgery avoided. Any other foods that are high in antioxidants are excellent to remedy cataracts, and other eye problems, from the inside out.

Causes of Cataracts

Cataracts causes are from the same hazards that can cause chaos in our body, leading to many other degenerative diseases. Some of the cataracts causes:

  • Genetic disorders.
  • Deficiency in antioxidant nutrient and enzymes, especially vitamin B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin) vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium and zinc.
  • Harmful substances from processed foods that are high in fats and low in fiber, artificial sweeteners, sugar, alcohol, caffeine, drugs, mercury, steroids, and tobacco, just to name a few.
  • Excessive exposure to glare from computer use.
  • Extensive exposure to direct sunlight.
  • Other diseases, like diabetes.

Diet/Lifestyle Suggestions To Prevent Cataracts Formation

A diet high in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables promote overall good health and is the best defenses against eye diseases. Grapes, grape seeds, blueberries, blackberries, bilberry, raspberries and strawberries are rich with a phytonutrient (anthocyanidins) that is effective in protecting against cell degeneration in our eyes.

This phyto-medicine may even increase your range of vision, improve short-sightedness, reduce inflammation and decrease sensitivity to bright lights. All good for eye problems.

Other good ‘eye foods’ you can eat that may help prevent cataracts are: kelp, legumes, oatmeal, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, nuts and seeds.

Most importantly, if there is already sign of cataracts, quit smoking. Substances in tobacco will hasten the formation of cataracts.

Recommended Healing Foods To Improve Eye Health

Two very important compounds that are highly beneficial for eye health are lutein and zeaxanthin which can be found in some of the vegetables listed below. In order to fully absorb these oil-soluble compounds, be sure to add a little fats to your juice (use coconut oil, olive oil or flaxseed oil).

Include fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants and flavonoids into your juicer recipes. Asparagus helps increase the glutathione level that is necessary for this condition.

Fresh plant foods that are deep in yellow-orange-red colors contain phytonutrients best suited for this purpose.  Carrot is rich in beta-carotene; it helps protect your eyes and reduces the risk of cataracts formation.

  1. Shingles can give you cataracts, as can steroids, and X-Ray CT scans can make them worse, or harm your immune system, 80% of which originates in the friendly gut bacteria, and some of the immune system originates in the lungs also, though each part of the body has it’s own friendly bacteria giving protection there also, so anything that harms the gut flora, like antibiotics, or X-Rays, can open you up to flare-ups of shingles that can then cause cataracts. I have found some relief with putting a drop or two of castor oil in each eye at night before going to bed, my cataracts are definitely much smaller now as a result, and I think the ketogenic diet which I have only just started is also starting to lessen them further. I have only used castor oil a few nights so far, less than 7 nights.
