This Compound Is Toxic To The Body, And It’s Hiding In These 10 Foods
Last updated on
A commonly used compound could be killing your chances of losing weight or staying healthy. This compound is addictive and sold by companies all over the world. You will find it in just about every processed food on the grocery store shelves. What is this dangerous compound? Sugar is the toxic compound that is lurking in most foods.
While your body needs a certain amount of sugar, the sugar found in processed food can be difficult for your body to process. When you consume sugar more than your body needs, the excess that cannot be converted into energy is converted into fat and stored in your body.
Along with affecting your waistline, sugar can also damage your skin. Wrinkles can be the result of eating processed food. Sugar can bond to collagen and prevent the proper function of the molecule—causing wrinkles and other skin problems.
Eating excessive sugar can also limit brain function. Neurotransmitters in your brain will reduce activity, leading to a brain fog that can last several hours.
So how can you avoid sugar? You will not be able to completely eliminate sugar from your diet, but you can keep an eye out for some of the foods that are likely to contain the highest levels of sugar. If you want to start improving your health, cut back on these 10 foods that are known to contain a lot of sugar.
1. Whole Wheat Bread
You are probably aware that white bread contains sugar, which is why many people switch to whole wheat bread. While whole wheat bread is a healthier alternative to white bread, it also contains an abundance of sugar.
2. Commercially-Prepared Flavored Yogurt
Yogurt is another food that is often thought of as a healthy option yet it also contains a lot of sugar.
If you buy commercially-prepared yogurt, stick with plain yogurt and include your own fresh ingredients, such as fruit or nuts, instead of purchasing flavored yogurt.
3. Fat-Free Salad Dressing
Like most “fat-free” products, fat-free salad dressing actually contains a lot of sugar. It is not difficult to make your own salad dressing using natural ingredients. Typically, you will combine several herbs and spices with a small amount of olive oil to create a healthy salad dressing with no added sugar.
4. Beef Jerky
Beef jerky often contains added sugar to bring more flavor to the dried meat stick.
You can definitely find beef jerky with no added sugar, but some of the most popular brands of beef jerky use additional sugar, especially if the beef jerky has any additional flavoring.
5. Granola Bars
Granola bars are thought of as a healthy food, yet they can be just as unhealthy as any other snack bar. Take a look at the nutritional facts on the label of the bar before buying. Look for hidden sugar under the names “organic agave” and “organic cane syrup”. Manufacturers often use unfamiliar names to attempt and trick consumers.
6. Whole Grain Cereals
Whole grain cereals can be a healthier option than eating sugar-filled cereals, but they also use sugar to add some flavor to the cereal. If you do eat whole grain cereals, do not add sugar. If you want more sweetness, then add some honey or some fresh fruit.
7. Commercially-Prepared Nut Butter
Nut butter is a good source of protein and a good source of sugar. In order to create that sweet flavor, most commercially-prepared nut butter contains added sugar.
Before buying a container of nut butter, look at the label. There are plenty of nut butter available that contain no added sugar, you just need to examine the labels. Or, make your own.
8. Non-Dairy Milk
When you look at healthy recipes you are likely to come across some recipes that include non-dairy milk. This includes almond milk, coconut milk, and soy milk. While some of these milk products may contain less fat than dairy milk, they may also contain a large dose of sugar.
Make sure you look at the nutritional information before adding non-dairy milk to your smoothies.
9. Pretzels
A good majority of pretzels contain added sugar; though, you can find pretzels without additional sugar or corn syrup.
As with most of the foods on this list, while you do not need to completely cut pretzels from your diet (although that would be best), you should take a moment to look at the nutritional information before purchasing.
10. Pasta Sauce
Organic or all-natural pasta sauce may not be as healthy as you would imagine. These sauces still contain sugar. The healthiest pasta sauce is homemade from fresh tomatoes and seasonings.
While these foods often contain a lot of sugar this does not mean that you need to completely avoid them. Just make sure that you pay attention to what you eat and are making a conscious effort to cut back on sugary foods.
