Could This Be The Hidden Reason Why You Keep Getting Sick?

Last updated on

If you tend to get sick on a regular basis, or more frequently than is normal, then you may want to consider the possibility of mold, spores, mildews and dust mites lurking in the house. Common housekeeping habits could be one of the reasons you are getting sick.

You may need to change the products that you use, increase the frequency that you clean or wash certain items around the house, and reconsider your entire cleaning schedule. Here are 6 ways that your home could be making you sick.

1. Damp Bath Mats Can Cause Mold

Forgetting to wash your bath mat and any other towels or rugs in your bathroom can lead to the growth of mold, spores and bacteria. Whenever you take a shower or a bath, the humidity in your bathroom increases. This humid temperature supports the growth of mold.

To combat the humidity, some people sprinkle their bath mat with cornstarch or other cleaning products intended to keep items dry. This promotes the growth of yeast, bacteria, and mold. Your best option is to towel off in the tub to keep excess water from getting on the bath mat and the floor of your bathroom.

2. Dirty Bed Sheets Can Lead To Dust Mites

Furnitures are the perfect breeding grounds for dust mites. These microscopic bugs love the warmth and humidity of your body, which is why dust mites are a greater problem for pillows, mattresses, and couches.

While a certain amount of dust mites should not pose a health risk, people with asthma and allergies sometimes experience adverse reactions to the presence of dust mites. If you want to prevent dust mites, you need to make sure that you are cleaning your furnitures correctly.

Wash your bed sheets, pillow cases, and towels on a weekly basis. They should be washed in hot water and thoroughly dried before placing them back on the bed. Vacuuming your carpets, rugs, curtains, and furniture every week can also help eliminate dust mites.

3. Refrigerators Can Blow Dust Into Your Kitchen

Your refrigerator could be blowing dust around your kitchen, contaminating food and your counters. As part of the cooling process, your fridge needs to vent cold air through the fridge. Over time, the coils or the pan that hold water until evaporation can become clogged with dust. This dust is then blown around your kitchen.

To avoid this problem, clean your fridge regularly. On older models, you can clean the tray or pan that collects the water. On some of the newer fridges, you may need to remove dust from the coils along the back of the fridge. Whichever cleaning method you choose you may want to turn off your fridge while cleaning.

4. Your Vacuum Cleaner May Spread Contamination

It is easy to assume that your vacuum cleaner actually removes all of the dust and particles sitting in your carpet. Unfortunately, you could be spreading these contaminants around your home each time you vacuum your carpet.

HEPA filters will help filter out 99 percent of particles that pass through the vacuum. Beware of any vacuum that claims to have a HEPA-like filter. These will not offer the same level of protection and will simply pass the particles back into your room.

5. Cleaning Products Can Exacerbate Your Illness

Certain cleaning products can increase the severity of your illness or weaken your immune system, making you more vulnerable to illness. If you notice headaches, eye irritation, or breathing problems while cleaning, you should immediately stop using your current cleaning products and look for completely natural alternatives.

Sometimes you will not even notice the damage that your cleaning products are doing. Instead of relying on commercial cleaning products, turn to natural solutions. You do not really need all the various commercial cleaning products to clean your home when there are many other everyday items that will do the trick.

Use a mixture of vinegar and water to clean glass. You can use baking soda in place of abrasive scrubbing products. A simple mixture of soap and water should handle almost any other cleaning task that you have. Or, make your own multi-purpose organic enzymes.

6. Forgetting To Change Filters Can Increase Asthma Attacks

Many people forget to change the filters on their furnaces, which can spread airborne particles and dust that may cause an asthma attack. You should replace the filter for your furnace every three months and at the start of winter. Have a schedule written up and put it up on your fridge where you can see it, and keep in mind to change the filters.

These are not the only housekeeping habits that could be making you sick, but they are a good place to start. Think about the process that you use for cleaning your home. If you are making any of the mistakes mentioned, then make it your goal to adjust your cleaning habits.
