Even though turmeric is a proven super-healer, not all turmeric are created equal. If you have ever thought that turmeric is a shriveled, decrepit little root, then you have likely only seen commercially-grown turmeric root. Compared to these pesticide-grown turmeric roots, organic turmeric root looks plump and colorful.

There is always a lot of debate regarding the benefits of eating organic food and avoiding commercially grown produce. Does this apply to turmeric and other spices? Here is what you need to know about organic vs. conventionally grown turmeric.

 

What Is Turmeric?

For those of you that are unfamiliar with this root, turmeric is often used as a spice in Indian cuisine. It belongs to the same family as ginger and contains many of the same properties. Both spices contain powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.

Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is responsible for providing a wide range of health benefits. It helps reduce inflammation, fights free radical that are known to cause cancer, and provides relief from arthritis pain.

Studies have shown that turmeric can be just as effective at treating headaches, minor aches and pains as taking ibuprofen or other pain relievers. Unlike medications, turmeric will not upset your stomach. In fact, curcumin can help prevent indigestion and heartburn.

Another benefit of turmeric is its ability to prevent the buildup of plaque that can clog arteries and lead to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Other studies suggest that turmeric could be useful for lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Since turmeric contains strong antioxidants, it could help fight free radicals and improve the condition of your skin. There is evidence to suggest that this could help prevent certain types of cancer, including skin, colon, and prostate cancer.

In order for the turmeric to retain these properties, it is best eaten raw. And if you have to eat them raw, then using organic turmeric would be the safest option.

Is Commercially-Grown Turmeric Root Safe To Eat?

Whether or not commercially grown turmeric root is safe to eat depends on your point of view. Some feel that there is little difference between commercially and organically grown turmeric, other than the appearance. Though, there is growing evidence to support that idea that organically-grown turmeric is better.

When you compare both the organically-grown and commercially-grown roots, there are differences in size and quality of both variations. Ultimately, the decision is yours to make if you want the best result.
