Do you know that different food tastes are not just for making your food taste good? Each different taste have different functions for our body.

SOUR TASTE

What It Does:

Foods with a SOUR taste improve appetite and increase the flow of saliva and digestive juices. However, always remember moderation. Too much of sour intake causes your digestive system to over-produce digestive acids and may cause queasiness.

Some Examples of SOUR Foods:

Citrus fruits like lemon, sour lime, certain variety of oranges and grapefruit. Other fruits such as unripened mangoes, peaches, tamarind, amla (Indian goose berries).

SALTY TASTE

What It Does:

NATURAL sodium improves the taste of foods, cleanse the body, tone the adrenal glands, kidneys, prostate and thyroid gland. It boosts the digestive capacity when taken together with other foods.

Natural sodium from natural foods are usually “packaged” with potassium.

Natural SALT regulates blood pressure, reduces water retention, breaks-up mucus congestion in sinusitis, prevent over-acidity in the body and many more health benefits.

Examples of Naturally SALTY Foods:

Celery, sea vegetables like kelp and seaweed, artichokes, tomatoes, sea salt.

BITTER TASTE

BITTER is the taste you get when you eat dark-green leafy-vegetables, especially when raw.

What It Does:

BITTER stimulates the appetite and helps bring out the flavor of the other tastes.

BITTER taste is a powerful DETOXIFYING agent, and has antibiotic, anti-parasitic, and antiseptic qualities.

It is insulin-like foods suitable for diabetics, and helpful in reducing weight, water retention, skin rashes, fever, burning sensations and nausea.

Examples of BITTER Foods:

Green leafy vegetables (uncooked) like kale, spinach, cabbage, dandelion greens, rocket salad leaves, bitter gourd/melon, radicchio and bitter beans.

SWEET TASTE

What It Does:

SWEET taste naturally satisfies our immediate hunger and increases our energy. It is excellent for building the body’s vital tissues (i.e. plasma, blood, fat, muscles, bones, marrow, and reproductive fluids).

SWEET taste also increases saliva, soothes mucous membranes and burning sensations, relieves thirst, and has beneficial effects on the skin, hair, and voice.

Table sugar (SIMPLE carbohydrates) as those found in processed foods pull valuable vitamins and minerals from your body causing a nutritional DEFICIT. They’re a NO-NO.

On the other hand, fruit sugar (COMPLEX carbohydrates) is nourishing, enriched with vitamins and minerals that can be easily assimilated by our bodies. Between the two types of sweets, choose COMPLEX carbohydrates!

Examples of SWEET Foods:

Most (ripe) fruits and some vegetables.

PUNGENT TASTE

What It Does:

In small amounts, PUNGENT taste stimulates digestion, promotes detoxification by sweating, dispels gas, aids circulation, improves metabolism, and relieves muscle pain.

It is therapeutic for clearing congestion in the head and upper respiratory tract.

Examples of PUNGENT Foods:

Garlic, ginger, onion, chillies (e.g. havanero, cubano, jalapeno), horseradish, and spices.

ASTRINGENT TASTE

ASTRINGENT is the taste when you bite into an UNRIPED fruit like the guava, or persimmon, cranberry or grape. It gives an immediate dry, absorptive feeling in the mouth. Not a very popular taste.

What It Does:

It helps arrest bleeding where there is hemorrhaging and aids healing where there is diarrhea.

It has the ability to bind to toxins and carry them out of the body.

It reduces the flow of urine when there is an excessive loss of body fluid due to frequent perspiration, urination or incontinence.

ASTRINGENT taste foods are slightly anesthetic and therefore calming, but they also reduce sensitivity.

Examples of ASTRINGENT Foods:

Some uncooked vegetables, some unriped fruits like pears, apples, pomegranate and various herbs.
