One area where many people transitioning to eating healthy struggle with, is taste. There are many commercially-prepared condiments and sauces that taste good and people find it difficult to give up.

Over the years, many have come to depend on tomato ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard other sauces to help add more flavor to their meals. Whether you are trying to eat healthier or simply want to save some money, how about making your own homemade sauce?

Homemade Ketchup

Ketchup is one of the most used condiments. This simple recipe will teach you how to make your own healthy ketchup, without the added high fructose corn syrup.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of vine tomatoes
  • ²/3 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of organic coconut sugar or jaggery
  • Seasalt to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon mustard powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon of garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon celery salt
  • A pinch of all spice powder

Method:

Wash the tomatoes and remove the leaves if any. Make a small cut around the tomatoes just to break the skin. Put the tomatoes into a pot big enough to hold them all, fill with water and boil them on medium heat till cooked. When the skin comes off the tomatoes, they’re nicely cooked.

Drain the water and leave to cool a little.  Remove the skins, cut up the tomatoes and remove the seeds. In a large blender, put in the cooked tomatoes, and all seasonings and spices. Blend into puree or into the desired consistency.

Store in a sterilized glass container that is airtight. In the fridge, it can keep for up to a month. The color may not look like the commercially-prepared ketchup, but it tastes good and so healthy without preservatives!

By making your own sauces, you can save money while making healthier choices. Most of the bottled sauces that you find on store shelves are packed with a variety of additives and artificial flavorings/colorings. When you make it yourself, you know exactly what goes into each recipe.
