5 Important Reasons Why You Need To Start Making And Using Your Own Coconut Oil Toothpaste

Last updated on

Toothpastes you buy from the store come filled with fluoride, stuffed with sulfate, and loaded with chemicals that you don’t want anywhere near your body, not especially in your mouth. Think of everything these chemicals will pass through and then think again about toothpaste.

There are many reasons why you should make and start using your own toothpaste using natural ingredients!

1. No Harmful Chemicals

Conventional toothpaste such as Colgate Total contains an antibacterial chemical called triclosan, which has been linked to concerns over antibiotic resistance and endocrine disruption.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are a serious concern, as they can promote a wide variety of health problems, including: breast, ovarian, prostate, and testicular cancer, preterm and low birth weight babies, precocious puberty in girls, and undescended testicles in boys.

Some animal studies showed that triclosan caused fetal bone malformations in mice and rats, which may hint at hormonal effects.

Fluoride is another common chemical in conventional toothpaste. Fluoride is a toxic industrial waste product that is a poison to your body even in trace amounts.

2. Effective Against Cavity-Causing Bacteria

Research shows that massaging coconut oil into your gums for about 10 minutes daily (continued for three weeks) significantly reduces decay-causing Streptococcus mutans as well as plaque.

3. No Foaming Agents

Many toothpastes also contain surfactants like sodium laurel sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate (SLS), or sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES). Surfactants are chemicals responsible for the foaming action of the toothpaste, but they also interfere with the functioning of your taste buds by breaking up the phospholipids on your tongue.

This enhances bitter tastes and is thought to be the reason why everything tastes so bad right after you’ve brushed your teeth. This may also be part of why coconut oil works so well for oral hygiene, as it helps maintain a more natural balance of lipids on your tongue, while still having potent antibacterial properties.

Not to mention, SLS has even been linked to painful canker sores, with research suggesting an SLS-free toothpaste should be used for people with recurring sores.

4. Inexpensive

It takes only a small amount of coconut oil to keep your teeth clean, and one jar can easily last you months, making it a very inexpensive toothpaste.

5. Easy To Make

Making your own toothpaste is fairly easy, and you can flavor it to your taste! Peppermint essential oil is an obvious winner, but there are other combinations of essential oils you can try. Peppermint is an antioxidant and has antibacterial properties that kill the anaerobic bacteria in the mouth.

Other Essential Oils You Can Use

Cinnamon Essential Oil

Long used for its medicinal properties, cinnamon essential oil is antifungal, antibacterial and has the greatest antimicrobial potency against the toxins responsible for tooth decay and gum disease, as well as throat infections.

Spearmint Essential Oil

Spearmint essential oil is similar to peppermint: a strong antiseptic, that eliminates germs and helps wounds heal more quickly. Like peppermint, spearmint soothes soft tissues found in the gums and throat. The only real difference is the taste: I prefer peppermint.

Myrrh Essential Oil

Myrrh essential oil is another soothing antiseptic that supports gum health. It heals cuts and ulcers in the mouth and soothes the soft tissues of the gums. This essential oils also supports blow flow to gum tissue, helping fight gum disease.

Clove Essential Oil

Underrated and overlooked, clove essential oil may be one of the best for mouth-health. Used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine, clinical research has shown that clove essential oil inhibits bacterial growth, is an antiseptic and even acts as a strong disinfectant.

Make Your Own Natural Coconut Oil Toothpaste

The list of ingredients to make your own toothpaste is fairly short, and you would have most in your home already.

What You Need:

  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil, whipped or melted
  • 2½ tablespoons bentonite clay
  • ½ teaspoon natural green stevia (or ½ teaspoon Himalayan salt)
  • 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil (or other essential oil of choice)

Bentonite clay is a natural adsorbent, which means it draws toxins and removes them from your body. Bentonite clay even removes acidic materials from your mouth, to help reduce halitosis. It remineralizes your teeth and strengthens them. Coconut oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties to make this natural tooth scrub an oral health superhero.

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in your Magic Bullet and blend until smooth. Store in an airtight container.

To use your homemade toothpaste, spread a little bit of it on your toothbrush and brush your teeth like you normally would. Be sure to rinse your mouth out after you’re finished. The bentonite clay will have absorbed a lot of toxins for removal.

Try it a few times till you get your desired texture. You may add more or less coconut oil, or the dry ingredients, until you get the perfect blend.
