Understanding Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that afflicts the young and the old alike. It usually affects mostly the face, and to a lesser amount on the upper chest, shoulders and back.

Acne rosacea occurs in people in middle to older age, often a chronic skin condition. It appears as redness of the skin with pimple-like breakouts and scaly, flaky dry patches.

The increase in oil gland activity in the nose pores when uncared for, especially in men, may cause a growth spurt of the tissues on the nose, making it bulbous and lumpy.

Acne vulgaris more often afflicts the teenagers and the youth. It often starts around puberty when the surging of reproductive hormones stimulate the activity in the oil-producing (sebaceous) glands of the skin.

Acne results when a collection of dried sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria clog the hair follicles, blocking the sebum from being eliminated through the pores. The blocked sebum-filled hair follicle gets infected by bacteria, resulting in inflammation and infection.

When this happens, it produces skin eruptions that is known as acne. Some unfortunate people have a tendency for severe acne that forms large abscess which may rupture into the skin, creating more inflammation. This is called cystic acne.

Symptoms of Acne

Acne ranges from mild to very severe. Mild acne are usually just a few (sometimes even unnoticeable) blackheads or a few pimples here and there. They normally don’t leave scars. Though mild, it can get rather perplexing when it happens to a young teenager.

Some people experience severe acne that may cover the entire face. These cystic acne are large, red, painful and pus-filled, some oozing with abscesses. After healing, severe acne usually leaves scars that are lasting. Severe acne can be rather damaging to the self-esteem of sufferers.

It seems unfair, but there are also elderly people who have to contend with both wrinkles AND acne (rosacea).

Causes of Acne

Acne (vulgaris) is very common at puberty due to the increased levels of reproductive hormones. The hormones cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and produce more sebum. On top of that the skin pore cells also produce keratin, a kind of protein.

The combination of both the secretion of sebum and keratin leads to pores blockage or formation of blackheads or whiteheads.

Eating a diet high in processed foods that are loaded with sugar and fats, meat and dairy products, food allergies, toxins overload and stress, can all contribute to acne. The ladies might also encounter the occasional acne during the time of the month when they menstruate due to hormone imbalance.

External toxins or bacteria, such as dirt and environmental pollution may also clog pores and cause acne.

How To Get Rid Of Acne Naturally With Simple Diet/Lifestyle Changes

Acne and break-outs are a reflection of your internal health, your body’s way of telling you that it is very toxic internally and toxins need to be eliminated.  When they don’t get eliminated properly, they come through the skin, your body’s largest detoxification organ.

Treating acne with medications or topical cream will not do much as it is a deeper health issue. By doing just a few of these suggested diet/lifestyle modifications, you may see a big improvement in your skin:

  • Stay away from all kinds of sugar—the biggest culprit, yes including fruits; processed foods, foods high in fats and low in fiber, trans-fatty acids and flour products. Eliminate all grains, especially those that contain gluten, chocolate, alcohol, caffeine and smoking if you want to see any improvement at all. This is usually the biggest step you could take for your skin to clear up.
  • It is important during this time, to drink lots (and I mean lots) of pure drinking water to flush out the toxins. See this page for your minimum requirement, then drink more than that. Green juices are most cleansing for your entire system that will help healing from the inside out.
  • Drink 2-3 glasses of green juices daily to help alkalize your body, cleanse the system and nourish/hydrate your cells for faster healing.
  • More often than not, acne is a result of very poor gut health. In some people, a parasite cleanse is necessary. Then, take a high quality probiotics to rebuild your immune system.
  • Omega 3 most often may help to reduce inflammation of the skin. Take 2 tbsp of cold-pressed flaxseed oil daily to help reduce the acne from spreading. Coconut oil may be a good addition for healing of the gut.
  • Most acne sufferers are often deficient in zinc that help regulates your body’s hormonal balance. You may add this mineral to your diet by eating sunflower or pumpkin seeds and nuts.
  • Maintain a general care of your acne by washing the affected areas with a mild soap. Use only water-based cosmetic (if you must use cosmetic), otherwise avoid cosmetic to prevent further clogging of the pores.
  • And finally, after doing all the above, sleeping at least eight hours every night is important for your body to rejuvenate and make use of all the good you’re doing during the day. Sleeping by 10.00 pm is the best time to allow your body to detoxify properly. This is usually one of the most difficult thing to do but it is so necessary for your skin to get well again.
