Drink This Turmeric Milk One Hour Before Bed To Improve Digestion

Last updated on

Nearly everyone has experienced the unpleasant sensation of feeling overly full or having an upset stomach at bedtime. This is particularly a possibility if the evening meal has been heavy or rich in nature. This poor bedtime digestion can lead to a number of problems, including an acid reflux, stomach cramps and interrupted sleep.

Fortunately, there are ways to help treat this problem naturally. Below, the benefits of turmeric milk are discussed as a bedtime drink and a recipe is given for an anti-inflammatory bedtime beverage based on coconut and turmeric. This drink can improve digestion and avoid nighttime heartburn and reflux.

The Benefits Of Turmeric Milk

Turmeric milk is a very common bedtime drink in India, much in the same way that hot chocolate or warm milk is in America. This milky drink is promoted by Ayurveda, an Indian healing tradition which is around 5,000 years old!

The warming effect of turmeric and ginger both can help to promote restful sleep, but this drink also helps to encourage good digestion.

The health benefits of this milk come, of course, from the amazing properties of its ingredients. Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory, and has long been used to promote good digestion and prevent nausea and heartburn.

Coconut milk is also an important ingredient, as it contains healthy fats and also has antimicrobial properties which can prevent stomach or digestive upset from bacteria.

And then of course, there is turmeric which also has potent anti-inflammatory properties which are known to soothe down the lining of the digestive tract and even prevent the formation of ulcers.

Black pepper is added to enhance the body’s absorption of the curcumin in the turmeric, while honey not only gives this drink a wonderful flavor, it contains a wealth of enzymes, amino acids, vitamins and minerals which can all help improve digestion and soothe irritation in the digestive tract.

Recipe For Turmeric-Coconut Milk

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1-inch piece of sliced ginger root
  • Raw honey to taste

Directions:

  1. Add all ingredients, except the honey, together in a bowl and whisk together.
  2. Pour into a saucepan and heat until it is at a low boiling and bubbling.
  3. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Strain out the ginger root, add the honey and enjoy while warm.

This is not a difficult recipe to make, and it is delicious—the creaminess of the coconut blending well with the spice of turmeric and the sweetness of honey. And it is also a very effective remedy for digestion that will help to prevent nighttime stomach problems and promote uninterrupted sleep.

  1. Using coconut milk is not ideal. When you boil it, it has a tendency to break apart.

Hi Umah, to make this turmeric milk requires low-boiling, which does not separate/break-up the coconut milk. Try it! 🙂

  2. I love this, but I am finding that when I drink before bed I then wake up during the night to relieve my bladder. Can a tumeric capsule be an alternative?
