The adrenal glands are located on top of each kidney. The main purpose of the adrenals is to enable your body to deal with all types of stress. They mobilize hormones for enduring physical or emotional challenges and deprivation, storing up physical reserves when they are available.

Over-taxing the adrenals with prolonged mental, physical and emotional stress causes a condition known as adrenal fatigue that leads to a variety of physical and psychological health issues.

In addition to feeling tired all the time, you may have difficulty getting up in the morning or perhaps you regularly feel stressed. Other symptoms include:

  • Body and joint pain
  • Craving for salt or salty foods
  • Brain fog and poor cognitive function
  • Increased PMS and mood swings
  • Interrupted sleep
  • Depression and feeling easily agitated
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Decreased ability to handle stress
  • Longer time to recover from illness, injury or trauma

As your adrenal glands burn out, you may experience the effects of adrenal fatigue. Use the following methods to recover from adrenal fatigue and rejuvenate your body.

5 Essential Steps To Naturally Recover From Adrenal Fatigue

1. Protect Your Intestinal Flora

Your intestinal flora are microbiomes that react to stress. By limiting your consumption of sugar, alcohol, and caffeine, you can increase your body’s ability to produce beneficial intestinal flora.

Consuming fermented foods is an excellent way to rebuild your gut health. Include these probiotics-healthy foods in your diet daily to help reduce the symptoms of adrenal fatigue: Kefir, kimchi, kombucha, sauerkraut, miso, yogurt, tempeh, apple cider vinegar and pickles.

2. Calm Your Nervous System

Take time out of your day to relax, practice self care. This will help you avoid over-stimulating your nervous system.

Take regular breaks, if you spend a lot of time performing a sedentary and repetitive function, sitting at a computer, or operating a cash register. Lie down horizontally if you can as it is more restorative than sitting.

Try to cut back on the amount of time you spend with electronic devices. Constant digital stimulation can affect your nervous system. Remove all electronic devices from your bedroom, two hours before your bed time. Turn on low light in the room, to prepare your body for sleep. Read a book, self-massage or mediate to help you sleep. Some stretching exercise may also help to induce sleep.

Make it a point to sleep before 10.30 PM as it is the best time for your body to do its restorative work according to the circadian rhythm.

3. Be Aware Of What You Eat

Be aware of what you eat. Eating a balanced and high quality food becomes you.

Consciously, start adding a variety of whole and natural, organic foods into your diet. Eat plenty of fruits vegetables especially the brightly colored ones as they are rich in antioxidants.

Choose plant protein over animal protein. Beans, seeds, nuts and eggs are good sources of complete protein. Make a big bowl of salad to include these and drizzle with healing fats such as olive oil or flaxseed oil.

Drinking fresh green juices every day is a good way to gradually rebalance your body system in all aspects.

4. Include More Herbs Into Your Diet

There are many different herbs that you can consume to beat adrenal fatigue and restore your natural energy. They are rich in antioxidants and contain many healing properties.

One easy way of getting more herbs into your system is by drinking herbal tea. Here are some teas that will help to improve your immune system.

Other herbs that are especially helpful for supporting adrenal function are:

  • Ashwagandha root in powder/capsule form

Licorice root:  An anti-stress herb known to increase energy, endurance, vitality and acts as a mild tonic.

  • Ashwagandha root and leaf:  Is anti-inflammatory and has direct beneficial effects on adrenal tissue and function, promotes strength and vigor.
  • Siberian ginseng root:  Has anti-depressant properties for calming anxiousness, improve sleep, reduce lethargy, lessen irritability and induce a feeling of well-being.
  • Ginkgo biloba:  A powerful antioxidant that reduces the damages done by free radicals, protects the adrenal glands, brain and liver.

5. Which Dietary Supplements

Nature’s vitamin C is very important vitamin and necessary for adrenal metabolism. It is used all along the adrenal cascade and acts as an antioxidant within the adrenal cortex. By “nature’s vitamin C”, I don’t mean just ascorbic acid but the whole package of the vitamin and bioflavonoids. It makes a big difference.

Vitamin E is essential to neutralize damages done inside the adrenal glands and elsewhere in the body. The right type of vitamin E for healing of the adrenal is one that is high in beta-tocopherols.

The B vitamins are needed in small quantities for adrenal healing and they work synergistically together as co-factors. B complex supplement from natural sources will be the best, if you can find them.

Calcium helps settle your nervous system and create inner calm in a person suffering from adrenal fatigue. Look for calcium citrate or calcium lactate (if you not lactose intolerant).

Most people are lacking in Magnesium, the one very important mineral that is needed for over 300 enzymatic functions in the body. It is well known for its relaxing capacity, muscles, mind, and whole body. The better absorbed forms of magnesium include magnesium amino acid chelate, magnesium phosphate, magnesium glyconate, magnesium orotate, and magnesium citrate.

Healing adrenal fatigue takes time If you want to overcome adrenal fatigue, be prepared to wait up to several months for the changes that you make to take effect. Take it one step at a time, including one of the suggestions from above every day. Over time, you may notice your fatigue lessen and your energy begin to return.

I’ve had tons of success with ashwaghanda root. After taking it for a month, I’ve become much less sensitive to caffeine. This is no small accomplishment. Coffee used to make my ears itch and seriously drain me. I take almost all the supplements mentioned in this article, or at least cycle them through. Magnesium was a big help too.
