Eating like the Greeks can also promote better heart health, reducing the chance of stroke and heart attacks. What Do The Greeks Eat?

What exactly do the Greeks eat that promote such good health? One major difference between the average Mediterranean diet and the average Western diet is that Greeks tend to eat more whole grains, instead of white grains. They also limit the consumption of red meats. Here is a list of some of the most common ingredients in Greek cuisine:

  • Beans
  • Fish
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Poultry
  • Greek yogurt
  • Nuts
  • Olive oil

Many of these foods contain healthy fats, which will easily limit your consumption of unhealthy fats, such as the fats found in processed foods and foods with refined sugars.

The food you eat (or don’t eat) will directly affect your health, including our brain health. It is no surprise that the Greeks tend to have lower rates of Alzheimer’s disease. There are different theories for this, but one thought is that consuming fewer unhealthy fats and having better overall health could help improve brain function.

The foods that the Greeks eat, including olive oil and fish, tend to contain more omega-3 fatty acids than a lot of the food found in the average Western diet. Consuming more omega-3 fatty acids can help with mental clarity and focus.

 

2. Fight Cancer By Eating Like The Greeks

According to recent research, eating unhealthy fats could increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer. In cultures where a lot of omega-3 fatty acids are present in the diet, such as the Mediterranean region, the occurrences of cancer are much lower than in other parts of the world.

While these benefits are amazing, you do not necessarily need to completely adopt a Mediterranean diet in order to fight cancer, prevent diabetes, and lower your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease; though, you may want to pay more attention to what you eat.

Try to include healthy fats in your diet and cut back on sugary foods. The Greeks focus their diet on vegetables, fat, and a moderate amount of meat. They do not go overboard on snack foods and other processed items.
